Before you pick them up
What is poi?
Poi is a weight on a cord, usually one in each hand, spun in circles around your body. It comes from Māori culture in New Zealand and is now practiced worldwide as dance, exercise and performance.
Am I too uncoordinated for this?
Coordination is what you build here, not what you need beforehand. Everyone starts by spinning one hand, slowly, and it comes on quickly once the timing clicks.
Do I have to spin fire?
No. Most people never do. Fire is a separate skill that needs proper training and a safety setup. Start with soft practice poi.
How long until I can do something that looks good?
Most beginners can do a basic weave within a few sessions. Short, regular practice works better than occasional long sessions.
Does it hurt when you hit yourself?
With soft practice poi, barely. You will bump yourself while learning, which is why beginners do not start with hard or heavy poi.
Can I do poi seated, or with limited mobility?
Yes. Poi can be done seated, and Sarah teaches gentle versions. Tell her what you are working with when you book, and check with your doctor or physio if you are recovering from something.
Is poi good for older adults?
A University of Auckland trial with adults aged 60 to 86 found poi about as effective as Tai Chi for physical and cognitive function over four weeks. It is one study in healthy adults, so treat it as encouraging rather than a guarantee.
Do you teach online?
Yes. 1:1 coaching and workshops run live on video, so you can join from anywhere with enough room to swing your arms.
Where are in-person lessons?
In Egypt. Sarah is based between Cairo and Dahab. Send a message with your city and she will tell you what is possible.
How much do lessons cost?
It depends on the format and group size. Send a message with what you have in mind and Sarah will confirm the price with the time.
Can The Flow Hub perform or teach at my event?
Yes. We run social circus sessions, festival workshops and performances for private events.
Which poi should I buy first?
Soft practice poi. They are forgiving, quiet and safe indoors. The first spin kit adds tails, which help you see your planes.
How do I pay?
Place your order on the site with no card. Sarah confirms it, then you pay cash on delivery or by InstaPay.
Do you deliver outside Egypt?
Not through the checkout yet. Send Sarah a message with your country and she will see what can be arranged.
Nothing matches that. Ask Sarah directly.
