Start with 1:1 coaching

Someone watching your movement fixes habits early. Not ready for a lesson? The first-week guide will get you going on your own.

Spinning fire poi in the desert after dark

Poi comes from Māori culture in Aotearoa New Zealand, where it has been part of performance and training for generations. Sarah’s teaching carries that lineage through SpinPoi.

Learn the shapes, not a list of tricks

Most tutorials teach isolated moves. Sarah starts with planes, stalls and transitions, so you can link anything to anything and find your own dance.

Choose a plane, a spin direction and a number of petals to see the shape poi draws.

What spinning does

Poi is a light weight on a cord. Simple to hold, surprisingly deep to learn, and gentle enough for most bodies.

Both hands, different jobs

Your left and right keep separate timing while your eyes track two moving objects. It builds coordination, reaction and a precise sense of where your body is. Sarah calls it a brain gym.

Rhythm that quiets the noise

Steady circles leave little room for your to-do list. Many spinners describe it as moving meditation: focused, absorbed and calmer afterwards.

Gentle on the body

No impact and no gym. Poi can be done standing or seated, with options for lower mobility. If you are recovering from an injury or condition, check with your doctor or physio first.

El Career Menen, episode 37

Sarah talks with host Mario George about working as a poi instructor, whether anyone can do it, and where to start. In Arabic, 1 hour 5 minutes.

What is poi?

Poi is a weight on a cord, usually one in each hand, spun in circles around your body. It comes from Māori culture in New Zealand and is now practiced worldwide as dance, exercise and performance.

How long until I can do something that looks good?

Most beginners can do a basic weave within a few sessions. Short, regular practice works better than occasional long sessions.

Is poi good for older adults?

A University of Auckland trial with adults aged 60 to 86 found poi about as effective as Tai Chi for physical and cognitive function over four weeks. It is one study in healthy adults, so treat it as encouraging rather than a guarantee.

How much do lessons cost?

It depends on the format and group size. Send a message with what you have in mind and Sarah will confirm the price with the time.

How do I pay?

Place your order on the site with no card. Sarah confirms it, then you pay cash on delivery or by InstaPay.
